Kinkead Ridge  What's New

August 2007

As we approach harvest, and try to protect the vintage from raccoons, possums, wild turkeys, migratory robins, deer, rabbits, skunks, coyotes, grape berry moth, Japanese beetles and more, I found this "Animal Delinquents" story very amusing! The last bottle of 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, autographed by the winegrower, leaves the winery with Liz.  This wine may still be available in wine stores in Ohio.

Big day July 27th! KVIE Public Television, Sacramento, filmed the vineyard and winery for a nationally syndicated broadcast show called "Americas Heartland". Details will follow when we know the dates the show will be aired.

Traffic may be heavy in Ripley the weekend of August 23-26, the annual Ripley Tobacco Festival.

How appropriate! Ron celebrated his 60th birthday at the former home of Nicholas Longworth, the father of American grape culture. This was a benefit for the nutrition council.

How could we be 60! Taft Museum, federalist mansion and former home of Nicholas Longworth

We are often asked about food and wine pairings. This is a great site to browse, Natalie MacLean's Food Matcher.

Kinkead Ridge is listed in the short "well-known wineries" section in the Ohio section of Kevin Zraly's 2008 Wines of America.

Higher alcohol wines should stop! We agree. Read this fabulous article by Randy Dunn of Dunn Vineyards! Click

“It is time for the average wine consumer, as opposed to tasters, to speak up. The current fad of higher and higher alcohol wines should stop.”
So begins Randy Dunn, weighing in against the current trend of high alcohol wines. He joins a growingly concerned chorus of respected industry and trade voices lamenting the demise of diversity in the wines of America's most celebrated appellations.

Kinkead Ridge in France! Nancy's best friend Norma visited friends in France and brought a bottle of the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. It was pronounced: "un tres bon vin!" I like that blue tablecloth!

Kinkead Ridge is on YouTube. Go to www.youtube.com, and type Kinkead Ridge into the search box. There are two major videos:  "A Vineyard Year" movie and a "Photo Album", as well as our entry into the Wine Spectator competition, and several "mini-videos" about vineyard and winery operations.

Food and wine pairing:

Kinkead Ridge wine and recipes will be featured in the upcoming "Ohio Food and Farms: From Garden Gate to Dinner Plate" by Marilou Suzsko.  Marilou is a regular contributor to the Cleveland Plain Dealer Food Section, the Sunday Magazine and Feast.

Brillat Savarin noted two features which distinguish man from beast:
1. Fear of the future.
2. Desire for fermented liquors.

Funny drinking quotes:

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."
