Kinkead Ridge Takes Step Two
Kinkead Ridge
partner and winemaker Ron Barrett must be licking his lips at the exciting
potential displayed by his Ohio River Valley 2001 vintage. For these limited
releases demonstrate the varietal characteristics that are essential for serious
future success.
The first few years are very difficult for an emerging winery because its
vineyards only contain young vines which will produce less flavor. Kinkead Ridge
planted its first Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1999 and 2001 was its first
vintage. So whilst depth of color and concentration on the palate are still
limited, the characteristics obtained show that in 4 or 5 years Kinkead Ridge
should be making substantial wines.
Just 95 cases of Syrah were vinified resulting in a wine that gives light
bramble and plum flavours with a little pepper followed by a clean finish.
Production of Cabernet Franc was 120 cases, with a hint of vanilla on the
bouquet, again some bramble and some berry notes and an attractive fruit
cocktail palate. 120 cases were made of Révélation which is an unusual blend
of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon balanced with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah.
This gave hints of bramble, plum and redcurrants. Its name suggests a French
style and if it were not for the inclusion of Syrah, it would be reminiscent of
some Bordeaux blends.
All the wines were aged in 100% new American oak casks.
At this stage the Cabernet Franc showed the most promise but the Syrah may yet
prove the winner.
